Georgia Townie and Team Collect a Ton of Candy for Troops

Dr. Praveen Gudipati and the team at Cumming Dental Smiles in Georgia collected more than 2,000 pounds of candy during the practice’s annual Halloween Treats for Troops candy donations event.

Every year, the practice collects candy and personal letters from trick-or-treaters and delivers them to the nonprofit Operation Shoebox in Belleview, Florida, whose volunteers create care packages with candy to be shipped during the Christmas season to U.S. troops serving overseas.

In the 2022 collection event, which began Nov. 1, the practice collected more than double the amount of candy it had received the previous year from children, local schools and volunteers from the Volunteering Together for Service nonprofit. Gudipati says the event helps reduce the huge amount of excess candy from children’s diets to protect their health, shows supports to troops, and teaches kids about gratitude, compassion and kindness.
