Exploring the Dark Side of Dentistry: Mental Health and Suicide

Exploring the Dark Side of Dentistry: Mental Health and Suicide

Mental health is an important topic that needs to be discussed in the dental industry. In a recent podcast, dentists Dr. Allison House and Shawn Zajas discussed the dark side of dentistry, which includes mental health issues, burnout, and even suicide. Statistics show that while middle-aged men are more likely to commit suicide, the trend is not specific to the dental profession as it affects both young people in dental school and older dentists.

It is important to note that not all causes of death are linked to suicide, which means that there may be a higher number of suicides among dentists than reported. The lack of clear data on this issue makes it difficult to establish a pattern, but it is clear that many physicians and dentists struggle with mental health issues.

As a dentist of 23 years, Dr. House acknowledged that mental health has always been a struggle for her. She has had to work hard to maintain her mental health, especially as dentists are typically perfectionists and are hard on themselves. This pressure can lead to mental health issues, including depression and anxiety.

It is crucial that the dental industry addresses mental health and provides support to dentists who may be struggling. Some ways to address this issue include talking about it openly, offering mental health resources, and encouraging dentists to prioritize self-care. Additionally, dental schools should incorporate mental health education into their curriculum to prepare future dentists for the challenges they may face.

It is time to sharing our stories and solutions on how to overcome this as an industry. The dental industry must recognize the importance of mental health and prioritize resources and support for dentists who may be struggling. It is a difficult and often uncomfortable topic to discuss, but it is essential to ensure that dentists can provide quality care to their patients while maintaining their own well-being. By addressing mental health, the dental industry can create a healthier and more supportive environment for all.
