Synopsis:

Even if not new in endodontics, the reciprocating motion has been recently applied to specifically designed nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments. Reciprocation has reduced the risk of fracture due to torsion and to the accumulation of metal fatigue, which are the main shortcoming of rotary NiTi instruments. After 4 years of extensive clinical use, research and teaching of all these instruments, the lecturers will describe and explain the several advantages that are related to the use of this kind of movement.

Reciprocating instruments are very easy to be used and taught, the learning curve is extremely short and optimal clinical results can be obtained earlier of other rotary systems. It became very simple, safe and fast to complete successfully even the most difficult clinical cases, while maintaining the maximum clinical standard of a high level practice and drastically reducing possible errors and problems related to the root canal preparation. All these aspects will be extensively and critically analyzed and discussed giving particular attention to the research conducted on the reciprocating instruments on the market and the clinical step by step of these techniques.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
  • Know the history of reciprocation in endodontics
  • Describe the basic concepts of modern reciprocation
  • Describe the basic properties of the different reciprocating instruments
  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the reciprocating movement
  • Perform new strategies for optimize root canal preparation with reciprocating instruments.
Description of Speaker:

He received the “Alfred Bean Memorial” prize from the Chicago Dental Society for the best Italian research graduate thesis 2001-2003, the "Hans Genet Award" from the European Society of Endodontology for the best European Researcher in 2013 and several other research prizes. He became Assistant Professor of Endodontics in the School of Dentistry at the Catholic University of Rome spending his time teaching, giving lectures and participating in the faculty practice. Dr. Plotino was Professor of Endodontics in the School of Dental Hygiene from 2005 to 2008 at the Catholic University of Rome where he has obtained his PhD in 2009. From 2009 he is working in the Department of Endodontics at the “Sapienza” - University of Rome as Senior Lecturer and Professor of Scientific English in the School of Dental Hygiene. Gianluca Plotino is certified member of the European Society of Endodontology (ESE), International Member of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE), active member of the Italian Society of Conservative Dentistry (SIDOC) and of the Italian Academy of Endodontics (AIE). Dr. Plotino has given several lectures, courses and hands-on courses worldwide and he also works in a private practice limited to endodontics and restorative dentistry in Rome. Nicola Maria Grande DDS, PhD Nicola M Grande received his degree in Dentistry (DDS) from the Catholic University of Sacred Heart, Rome, Italy in 1999 with a degree thesis on the fracture of NiTi rotary instruments. After two years in the Department of Endodontics at the the same University, he served as an Assistant Professor in Endodontics from 2001 to 2009.
